The payments landscape was undergoing seismic disruption. Mobile wallets, contactless cards, voice commerce, and augmented reality were reshaping how and where transactions happened. Visa's most premium clients — Fortune 500 companies hosting world-class sporting events — needed next-generation experiences that showcased emerging payment technology while delivering flawless guest experiences.
The Hospitality App Suite was designed for three of the world's biggest events: Super Bowl LI in Houston (2017), Rio Olympics (2016), and FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia (2017). Seven-figure client relationships were on the line. These weren't just consumer apps—they were brand experiences that needed to be absolutely bulletproof, multi-lingual, accessible across 190+ countries, and perform perfectly under unpredictable global traffic patterns.
The design challenge was multifaceted: create cohesive guest experiences across mobile, web, and emerging surfaces; design payment flows that felt frictionless for both first-time and returning guests; deliver compelling content (itineraries, maps, live updates, personalised recommendations); handle complex real-world logistics (multi-venue, multi-language, real-time comms); and innovate with emerging payment tech (voice, AR/VR) without sacrificing reliability.
