Ultimate Ears speaker lineup was expanding: BLAST, MEGABOOM, MEGABLAST, WONDERBOOM, BOOM 2, and ROLL. Each speaker model had different capabilities, connectivity options, and form factors. Customers opening their new UE speaker for the first time faced a complex setup gauntlet: firmware updates, Wi-Fi network selection, Bluetooth pairing, Alexa provisioning, Music Unlimited sign-up, and bonus content unlocking. The experience needed to be seamless, delightful, and work across six different hardware variants.
The design challenge was to create a unified onboarding experience that could accommodate three fundamentally different connectivity paradigms: Wi-Fi (BLAST, MEGABOOM, MEGABLAST, WONDERBOOM), Bluetooth (BOOM 2, ROLL), and Voice/Alexa integration. None of these should feel like "setup"—instead, the interface needed to feel like the speaker turning on for the first time, immediately recognising the user, and welcoming them to a new product category they'd just purchased.
We needed to bundle a lot of complexity—firmware updates that often took several minutes, SSID scanning and Wi-Fi network validation, Bluetooth multi-device arbitration, Alexa provisioning, account sign-up flows, and bonus content redemption—into a single, delightful 5-minute first-use experience that worked across iOS, Android, and the web.
"Consumer hardware onboarding fails when it feels like setup. It succeeds when it feels like the product turning on for the first time."
